Independent NHL Player Analytics

YOUR $12M PLAYER SCRUBBED.

We tell you what a player actually produced — and what it should cost — before you commit.

Slashing strips out the empty-net goals, separates real finishing skill from puck luck, and weighs every goal by what it actually meant on the scoreboard — the assists that built it included. Then it flips the ledger: every goal he was on the ice against, weighed the same way. One honest number, drawn from a full season and 1,312 games of play-by-play. The difference between what he created and what he cost is what you are actually paying for.

The Process

FOUR PROBLEMS. ONE TOOL.

The boxscore was never built to price a contract. Here are the four places it misleads you — and what Slashing does about each.

Rocket Richard Winner — Raw
N. MacKinnon
RAW GOALS53
ADJUSTED — EMPTY NETS REMOVED45

Eight empty-net goals padded the raw total. Scrubbed, the lead evaporates.

Runner-Up — Adjusted Leader
C. Caufield
RAW GOALS51
ADJUSTED — EMPTY NETS REMOVED51

Zero empty-net goals. Every marker earned. Remove the noise and the award changes hands.

PROBLEM 01
Empty Net Inflation

An undefended net inflates a player's goal total with zero reflection of skill. This season alone — 508 empty net goals were scored in the NHL. The Rocket Richard Trophy winner had 8. The runner-up had 0. Remove them and the award goes to a different player entirely.

PROBLEM 02
The Luck Premium

Every shot attempt carries a probability of scoring — determined by where it came from, how it was taken, and what preceded it. Slashing has built its own expected goals model, trained on every shot from 3 full NHL seasons, to assign that probability to every scoring opportunity in the league. A player posting big numbers on low-quality attempts is carrying a luck premium — and that premium will cost you on a five-year deal. Luck doesn't negotiate contracts. It did, but not for long.

PROBLEM 03
Not All Goals Are Equal

A go-ahead goal in the third period from the slot is not the same as a garbage-time marker into an empty net. The boxscore says they are identical. They are not. Slashing weighs every goal by what it actually meant — then flips it: every goal against while he was on the ice carries a weighted defensive cost. The result is a Net Impact Score — both sides of the ice, one honest number.

PROBLEM 04
The Number Before The Decision

The scrub removes the noise. A 33-variable expected goals model separates skill from luck across 341,000 shots. Every goal — for and against — is weighted by what it actually meant on the scoreboard. The Net Impact Score is where all of it meets the cap hit. What did you pay — and what did you actually get? Slashing delivers that answer before free agency opens, before the deadline, before you sign. We give you the windshield, not the rearview mirror.
